Sver

SVER is a new, fresh breath of air in Norwegian folk music. The word “sver” is an expression from the town of Røros, used to describe something that is grand and magnificent, or solid and intense, and the group tries to convey this through its music. The group has its basis in the traditional folk music of the Røros area, but also finds inspiration in the music of Hallingdal and Agder. The members of the group also compose their own music. The group has an exciting musical idiom, and the tunes it presents have a modern, youthful quality. The trio is one of the country’s most promising young folk music groups today, and has already managed to gain a name for itself with the folk music community. SVER cultivates a rhythmic and dynamic drive that can remind listeners of other musical genres, such as jazz and pop. The members of SVER are: Olav L. Mjelva (fiddle and Hardanger fiddle) Vidar Berge (guitar) Leif Ingvar Ranøien (two-row accordion) Awards and other distinctions: 2005: Second place in the Open Category at the National Contest for Traditional Music 2006: Received Tælstipend grant from SpareBank 1 2007: Finalist in INTRO-folk (Concerts Norway’s competition for launching new talent)
