Halvorsen, Jon Anders

J_A_Halvorsen

Folk singer, born in Lunde, Telemark, in 1969. Lives in Oslo
Jon Anders Halvorsen is a folk singer whose point of departure is the kvedar tradition in Telemark. He has studied with both renowned and unknown kvedarar in his home county of Telemark. His repertoire includes old stev (short, originally improvised songs), mediaeval ballads, broadside ballads and vocal versions of fiddle tunes. He enjoys presenting relatively obscure songs, and has collected songs himself in the field. He was a member of the first class to graduate from the School for Vocal Studies at the Ole Bull Academy in 2000. Students from the schools for instrumental and vocal studies joined forces to form the group Åtte Potte (1998-2001). Jon Anders Halvorsen was a member of the group Dvergmål (1995-2005) and is half of the duo Bruvoll/Halvorsen, formed in 2000. He also collaborates with kvedar Ingvill Marit Buen Garnås on the concert presentation Gåtesong. He competes in the most demanding category, A, at the National Contest for Traditional Music, and won first prize in 2002. In 2004 and 2005 he received a government grant for young, newly established artists. Starting in the autumn of 2005 he played the role of Prince Sveinung (Pamina), one of the leading parts, in The Magic Flute – a Folk Opera, directed by Leif Stinnerbom. It was performed on around 40 stages in Norway and Sweden, and was the most ambitious presentation in the history of the Norwegian Concert Institute.
